Between surfaces

Bio-mineral adhesives for paper and board packaging

Papkot adhesives go between paper surfaces: seals for packing lines and a white glue for folding cartons. A glue for the corrugator is under development.

Two sealing solutions work on vertical and on horizontal packing lines: RBLB, the release-free cold seal, and P12, the heat seal.

Two sealing solutions

For vertical and horizontal packing lines

RBLB, the release-free cold seal, and P12, the heat seal, work on both lines. Uses include flowpacks and pouches.

  • Vertical packing line

    • RBLB cold seal
    • P12 heat seal
  • Horizontal packing line

    • RBLB cold seal
    • P12 heat seal

RBLB and P12 work on vertical and on horizontal packing lines.

Between surfaces

What the adhesives do

Coatings go on the surface. Adhesives go between surfaces.

The adhesives are repulpable. All of them except P12 are bio-mineral, based on active silica, and plastic-free, tested by SGS. P12 is the only biopolymer among Papkot grades: it comes from pine trees.

Adhesives are a separate platform from coatings.

  • Bio-mineral
  • Plastic-free, tested by SGS
  • Repulpable
  1. A coating goes on the surface.
  2. An adhesive goes between two surfaces.
  3. The surfaces close: a plastic-free, repulpable seal.

Types and products

Three products: a release-free cold seal, a heat seal and a white glue.

  • RBLB

    Release-free cold seal

Based on active silica. It sticks on paper and on PLA at very high speed. The other side of the web needs no release coating.

  • P12

    Heat seal

The only biopolymer among Papkot grades: it comes from pine trees. It seals well at a lower temperature. With a full-width coat, the recyclability of the paper stays very high to the CEPI, Western Michigan and GB standards.

  • RBG

    White glue

The white glue for folding cartons. Bio-mineral, based on active silica, and polymer-free. Plastic-free, tested by SGS. Fully recyclable to the recyclability standards from the US to the EU to China.

More glues

For folding cartons, and a seal that closes on itself

Both glues are based on active silica and plastic-free, tested by SGS.

  • Folding cartons

    RBG, the white glue

Bio-mineral, based on active silica, and polymer-free. Plastic-free, tested by SGS. Fully recyclable to the recyclability standards from the US to the EU to China.

  • Seals only on itself

    Heat-activated cold seal

Plastic-free, tested by SGS, and based on active silica. Heat activates the seal. It seals only on itself: coated face to coated face.

Where the white glue goes

RBG, the white glue, goes on at the glue line of folding cartons, at the converter. It is polymer-free.

RBLB and P12 at the converter

How the seals go on the paper

RBLB and P12 go on the paper web like a coating, on the lines you already run: flexo, gravure, rod, air knife or a gap-fed roll.

Then the web dries at 100 to 120 °C, and cools down before it rewinds.

The reel then goes to the vertical or the horizontal packing line.

  • Gap-fed roll
  1. The coater puts RBLB or P12 on the web.
  2. The web dries at 100 to 120 °C.
  3. The web cools down, then rewinds.

Under development · Corrugated board

A glue for the corrugator

Papkot develops an active silica glue that replaces starch at the corrugator.

The drying time is zero. The glue reacts on contact with the paper.

Starch glue wets the paper with a lot of water and little starch, and the board must dry after. With this glue, the paper does not take that water and the board needs no drying: less energy, more speed.

The glue line is the usual point of failure of wet containerboard. This glue is water resistant, so the glue line is no longer where a wet box fails.

Papkot looks for partners to take this glue to market.

  • Drying time zero
  • Water resistant
  1. The glue goes on the tips of the flutes.
  2. The liner closes. The glue reacts on contact: drying time zero.
  3. Water falls on the board. The glue is water resistant.
